NY elected reps offer tour to save Niagara base

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (AP) - Members of New York's congressional delegation are inviting military officials to tour the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station in hopes of securing its future against looming defense cuts.

U.S. Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirstin Gillibrand, along with Reps. Kathy Hochul, Brian Higgins and Louise Slaughter, extended the invitation Wednesday in a letter to Air Force Secretary Michael Donley and Chief-of-Staff Norton Schwartz.

The elected officials want to convince the military leaders that the base is valuable to the nation's security as well as the local and state economy.

The 914th Airlift Wing of the Air Force Reserve and the 107th Airlift Wing of the New York Air National Guard share a tactical airlift mission at the base.
