NO postal employee sentenced for embezzling mail

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A New Orleans postal employee has been sentenced to a year of probation for embezzling mail.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says 28-year-old Chanel M. McGinnis stole $450 in cash that was inside a letter addressed to a Metairie resident on or about Feb. 7, 2011.

She faced up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. U.S. District Judge Nannette Jolivette Brown sentenced McGinnis to probation on Thursday and ordered her to pay $500 in restitution to the victim.
