JONESBORO, Ark. - Coming off of a pair of midweek victories against Southeastern Louisiana, the second-ranked Louisiana baseball team turns its sights to Arkansas State as the Cajuns and Red Wolves face off in a series that pits the top two teams in the Sun Belt against each other starting on Friday at 6 p.m. at Tomlinson Stadium-Kell Field.
The two teams will meet at 6 p.m. on Saturday before closing out the weekend with a 1 p.m. start on Sunday. All three games can be heard on News Radio 96.5 FM with Jay Walker making the call.
The Cajuns (41-6, 18-3 Sun Belt) hold a four-game lead over the Red Wolves (26-19, 14-7 Sun Belt) in the Sun Belt standings and can clinch at least a share of the regular season title with a sweep this weekend.
Louisiana has been outstanding on the road this season with a 17-1 record away from M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field including an 8-1 mark in Sun Belt play.
The Ragin' Cajuns hold the nations best overall record and best road record. The squad is the only team to reach 40-plus wins so far this season with Virginia being the only team capable of reaching that mark this weekend.
As a team, the Cajuns lead the conference in most offensive categories. Caleb Adams leads the squad in average hitting .393 with 13 doubles, six triples, 10 home runs and 31 RBI. Adams ranks second in the nation in both on base percentage (.521) and slugging (.760).
Junior Austin Robichaux (5-2, 3.40 ERA) will make the start on Friday for the Cajuns, while Carson Baranik (8-1, 3.41 ERA) is slated to start on Saturday. Senior Cody Boutte (6-0, 2.58 ERA) will close out the weekend making the start in the series finale on Sunday.
The Ragin' Cajuns hold a 71-36 edge in the all-time series with Arkansas State. Louisiana has won the last three meetings after sweeping the Red Wolves a year ago, while the Cajuns are 28-17 in Jonesboro, Ark.
Arkansas State won is last two contests after losing three straight. The Red Wolves lost their last weekend series at Georgia State a week ago dropping the first two games of the series 5-1 and 7-6 before winning the series finale 10-6.
ASU is hitting .274 as a team led by Matt Burgess with a .320 average, 10 doubles, three home runs and a team-best 46 RBI. Austin Baker is second on the team in RBI with 37 and has nine doubles, four triples and six home runs.
The Red Wolves will counter on the mound with right-handers David Owen (5-3, 3.88 ERA) and Bradley Wallace (3-3, 3.90 ERA) on Friday and Saturday. ASU has yet to determine a starter for Sunday.
Following the series with Arkansas State, Louisiana will head to Mobile, Ala. next weekend to close out the regular season road schedule against South Alabama.
