LAFAYETTE, La. - Nicholls State scored the go-ahead goal with nine seconds remaining, to defeat the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns on Monday night by a score of 2-1, at the Cajuns Soccer Complex. The loss drops the Cajuns record to 1-4-2 on the season.
The game was originally scheduled to be played on Sunday night at the Nicholls Soccer Complex, but bad weather over the weekend and poor field conditions forced the rescheduling to Monday in Lafayette.
The Colonels opened the scoring, finding the back of the net in the ninth minute of the game. Spencer Valdespino took a shot from outside the box and found the upper left corner of the net and beat Cajuns starting keeper Cory DeMarco, for her fourth goal of the season.
Louisiana would not go into the half trailing and found a way to tie it up before the break, with Kassidy Zeringue's first career goal, in the 41st minute.
Zeringue got a head on a crossing pass from Carly Ellender and buried it to knot the score at one. For Ellender it was her first career assist and third career point.
DeMarco would be replaced by Kendall Graham to start the second half in nets, after making two saves in the first 45 minutes.
The two teams would remain even for almost the entire half until Nicholls State struck with nine seconds remaining.
It was Valdespino again for the Colonels with her fifth goal of the season and second in the game. She received a pass from Sarah Tani, turned around and rifled a shot from the top of the box for the winner.
Graham made four saves in the half, but picked up the loss, falling to 0-3-2 on the year.
It was the third one-goal loss for the Cajuns this season, after falling to Southeastern Louisiana, 2-1, and Louisiana Tech, 3-2, earlier this season.
With tonight's game being moved to Lafayette, the Cajuns will now be finishing up an eight-game homestand this coming weekend when Prairie View A&M and Mississippi Valley State come to town. The Cajuns will take on PVAM on Friday at 7 p.m. and MVSU on Sunday at 1 p.m
