New School Health Center to Open

Poor attendance and many students going home sick-- and families without health insurance- create barriers to learning for Carencro Middle School.

The solution, principal Matt Harman says, is an on-campus clinic:

"If they're having illnesses...that translates to how they perform in the classroom; and we have a lot of students who don't have access to health care, so having a facility right here on campus keeps our students in school," Harman says.

The school-based health center is the second one of its kind in Lafayette Parish. The first was at Northside High.

This has been a 3-year project by Opelousas General Health System and LPSS.

The health center is like a full-service walk-in clinic, except it is on a school campus.

Services are free because of a $172,000 grant thanks to the Office of Public Health, Adolescent School Health Programs and the Department of Health and Hospitals.

The plan is to open the center to the whole community within 2 years.
