Some Lafayette teachers are taking discipline into their own hands....Working to create a new discipline plan for the Parish.
Lafayette schools saw an increase in retirements this year---95, compared to 56 at the same time last year. Many of those who've left the classrooms cite discipline issues as a contributing factor.
Current teachers are working to make a change.
"In order for learning to take place discipline has to be under control," Jennifer Guillory said, who teaches at Edgar Martin Middle School.
Jennifer Guillory teaches seventh grade and says bad behavior is getting worse in the classroom. So teachers are meeting to re-work the system's discipline matrix.
"We are creating more of a ladder system, we are making it simple. We are making it easier for students, parents, teachers, and administrators to understand."
Lafayette's current disciplinary matrix plan is pages upon pages long. But they hope the new system will be more concise, and just a few pages.
"We had issues with discipline this past school year, we want to make sure that we don't encounter those things again," Lafayette Parish Superintendent Dr. Pat Cooper said.
"The way we're approaching the whole discipline structure this year is from the bottom up. It's actually bringing in teachers, bringing in the principals, and let's really do something that's going to respond to their needs," Cooper said.
Administrators are pushing for more teacher involvement--And accountability for students who break the rules.
"If something occurs that's an infraction, there will be a consequence to that," Lafayette Parish Assistant Superintendent Sandra Billeaudeau said.
"I think everybody will benefit from this, but mostly the students and that's who I'm most concerned with," Guillory said.
The plan is to have a re-vamped discipline framework ready to present at next week's school board meeting. If that's the case, the board could vote on the new plan as soon as July seventeenth.
