New Performing Arts Theater in Lafayette

A new innovative performing arts theater will soon take center stage in downtown Lafayette.

It is just about finished and will open to the public in November. Pre-opening events will be held in October.

Two factors make this Acadiana Center for the Arts theater the only one of its kind in the southeast from Dallas to D.C.

One: movable chairs, a movable stage and movable floors.

"You can move the stage to the middle of the room-- arena style, or a thrust theater when bands or dancers are up front. You can change the audience performer relation fairly quickly," says designer Benton Deligner.

The seats can come back to create more floor space if needed or they can come out to seat about 300 people.

The second unique feature: sound.

Unamplified and amplified music alike can play here-- everything from solo players to a big group show.

"We've created a space that has flexible acoustics, so when you put in an amplified group we have adjustable devices that deaden the sound, a couple of panels come down on the side walls," says Deligner.

A combination of music, drama and other events will happen here-- things that local performers say are much needed.

"There's not a great place to have plays and concerts, so this is going to bring the arts scene up 10 notches," says Pine Leaf Boys singer Wilson Savoy.

The Pine Leaf Boys are just one of the local bands excited for the theater.
