New jobs for Lake Providence

LAKE PROVIDENCE, La. (AP) - State officials say Myriant Technologies will build a new 392,000-squre-foot acid plant at the Port of Lake Providence that will create about 50 new jobs and hundreds more in the project's construction phase in the parish with Louisiana's highest unemployment rate.
Gov. Bobby Jindal joined Stephen Gatto, the company chairman and chief executive, and Port Director Wyly Gilfoil for Tuesday's announcement.
The state says the project will create 49 direct jobs with an annual salary of nearly $40,000 plus benefits, and about 127 new indirect jobs. Additionaly, officials say when construction begins in early 2011, at least 250 construction workers will be needed.
East Carroll Parish has about 8,100 residents. Its November unemployment rate was 15.7 percent. The Louisiana Workforce Commmission said preliminary figures showed that about 2,650 parish residents held jobs last month, and about 494 were out of work.
