New Iberia Growth

New Iberia is moving forward with its initiative to grow and prosper. Wednesday, city and state officials met with residents about the "Louisiana Development Ready Community" program.

"This is about the business community, the private citizenry and the government coming together, to grow," said Mike Tarantino with Iberia Industrial Development.

New Iberia was selected as one of 12 cities across the state for the pilot program, which focuses on giving cities the tools they need to develop economically. Residents have been working with officials to come up with an action plan on how to bring in more businesses and residents to their city.

"The people in New Iberia are progressive, pro growth, pro business and they want to see our community grow and prosper," said Tarantino.

After nearly a year of planning, the city is ready to put their ideas into action. Officials revealed 5 task forces that the city will now implement:

-Community Communication
-Neighborhood Development
-Celebration of Cultures
-Infrastructure and Transportation
-Progressive Focus

The general focus is revitalizing New Iberia so that new businesses and people will be attracted to the city. This includes re-paving roads, promoting the unique culture, and making the city more modern and high tech.

Officials are hoping New Iberia's action plan can serve as a blueprint for other cities across the state.

"The ultimate goal is to position Louisiana to create new jobs, and attract new business investments faster than any other state in the South," said Louisiana Economic Development Secretary, Stephen Moret.
