Neighbors Rally Against Horse Farm Development

Residents in several Lafayette neighborhoods surrounding the Horse Farm are raising concerns about potential development.

Planning is still in the early stages for Lafayette's Horse Farm, but residents off West Bayou Parkway near Rotary Point are concerned about a potential parking lot being built on the back end of the property.

Now, neighbors are rallying together to block what they call construction of a concrete jungle. This week, Paula Broussard and several concerned residents went door-to-door alerting neighbors about the possible construction. She doesn't want her neighborhood off West Bayou Parkway and Charles Read to be used as a shortcut and fears people will loiter in the lot over night.

"A parking lot is great, but it wouldn't be great if you were living right next to that parking lot," said Broussard. She went on to say, "There is only one way in, one way out of our neighborhood and having a parking lot so close to our house is fearful."

Elizabeth Brooks, Director of Planning and Design for the Horse Farm says none of the plans are set in stone and wants to be transparent as they narrow down the options with the community's help.

"We're looking hard to find every alternative to making sure that all the neighborhood concerns are heard and addressed. We put all of the options on the table to be honest brokers of the process, but there are no decisions made to put a parking lot anywhere," said Brooks.

Neighbors aren't completely against the development of the Horse Farm, they just want to make sure the integrity of their neighborhood is protected.

"We don't mind having access to pedestrian paths or bikes on our side, just no permanent parking," said Broussard.

Developers of the Horse Farm are still asking for the community's imput. Phase two of the online survey asking what you want to see in the park ends Monday evening.

A series of community meetings is scheduled for December 3rd at the LITE Center and SLCC. For details on how you can get involved, log onto
