Moving Day for Lourdes

It was a big day for healthcare in Lafayette Saturday as the new Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center officially opened for business.

The new hospital opened it's doors Saturday morning, after more than two years of construction. It is the largest, single construction project to date in Lafayette at 396-thousand square feet, there are approximately 200-beds with the potential for a total of 332.

The new Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital officially opened its' doors at 6a.m. Saturday, so for the sixty-seven patients still at the old facility Saturday was moving day.

Each patient needing to take the fifteen minute trip to the new facility, a task that took sixteen ambulances several back and forth trips. Dorothy Auzeen was the last patient to leave the St. Landry Campus and was ready for the big move.

"It feels good. Are you looking forward to the new location? Well yes, because I've never been there before. It's going to be a new adventure."

For many at Our Lady of Lourdes, it was a bitter-sweet day closing the door on one chapter of the hospital's history.

"For thirty-eight years, this has been my second home. I know where all the little crannies are, I know where to find things, so it's definitely going to be the building and all the memories that this building holds for me," said Karen Blue, Nursing Supervisor.

Patients and staff alike saying good bye but are looking forward to new memories at a new and improved Our Lady of Lourdes.
