Nearly 70 percent of the more than 7,600 individual mechanical sewer systems inspected in Calcasieu Parish are in working order. That's according to a parish planning and development official.
Environmental Coordinator Kelley Carlin says 5,127 mechanical sewer systems have passed inspection while 2,481 have failed. Since January 2012, the parish has been inspecting mechanical sewer systems within the highly populated areas.
Carlin said the percentage of working systems is higher than when inspections first began. At the time, officials said about 50 percent were thought to be working properly. There are more than 30,000 mechanical sewer systems within the parish.
