Monroe Schools Set Higher GPA for Extra Activities

MONROE, La. (AP) - High school students in Monroe who want to
play football, march in the band or take part in other extra
activities will be held to higher academic standards next school
year.
The Monroe City School Board's new policy manual requires
students to pass six courses each year and to maintain a 2.0, or C,
grade point average to remain eligible.
News Star reports that the current standard for extracurricular
activities is a 1.5 GPA.
The higher standards were approved this past Wednesday and take
effect for the 2011-2012 school year.
Superintendent Kathleen Harris says the district is trying to
increase academic rigor to improve student achievement.
