Monroe Police Chief Asks Court to Bar Demotion

MONROE, La. (AP) - Monroe's mayor demotes the police chief to
captain, and the chief asks for a court order to remain chief while
he appeals the decision.
Chief Ron Schleuter (SLOO-ter) has been on administrative leave
since Feb. 16, after news reports revealed he had been secretly
taping Mayor Jamie Mayo and other city officials.
Schleuter went to court less than 20 minutes after he was sent
the demotion notice Monday.
Attorney Brian Crawford contends that Mayo kept Schleuter from
presenting testimony and evidence, and now is trying to demote him
before the court can consider his request for a court order.
Alexandria attorney Steve Oxenhandler, who investigated the
chief, says any appeal should go to the Monroe Municipal Fire and
Police Civil Service Board. He also says Schleuter did not have any
right to call witnesses.
