The storm previously knows as Subtropical Storm Melissa is now a full tropical system, therefore Melissa will now be known as Tropical Storm Melissa. Melissa made the transition into a "warm core" type tropical storm Wednesday morning and winds have increased to 60mph. Melissa is currently over the central part of the North Atlantic Ocean and is no threat to land, nor is it expected to strengthen. The storm will lose its tropical characteristics Thursday and should be a remnant low pressure area heading toward western Europe by the weekend.
The 2013 season was predicted to be a busy one. Melissa, being #13 slides into the low end of NOAA's prediction range of 13-19 named storms. Only two hurricane have formed this year, both being Category 1 strength. Hurricane Season officially ends November 30th.
