McCain, Schumer express optimism on immigration

WASHINGTON (AP) - Two senators who played a big role in an immigration overhaul in Congress say they're encouraged legislation will move forward despite resistance from the Republican-controlled House.

Sen. Chuck Schumer says it seems that a "large percentage" of the House realizes that doing nothing on immigration is not an option. The New York Democrat said Republican House Speaker John Boehner and others in the GOP leadership also realize that doing nothing is not an option.

Sen. John McCain, an Arizona Republican, said senators are ready to sit down with House members to bring the issue to a conclusion.

Schumer and McCain spoke to reporters Thursday after meeting with President Barack Obama at the White House.

House Republicans met Wednesday to discuss the issue and are embracing a step-by-step approach to immigration.
