Maurice has seen a lot of growth over the past year, as seen by its sales tax collections and new subdivisions popping up around the village.
Monthly sales tax collections for May were up roughly 46 percent as compared to the same month last year, according to numbers from the Vermilion Parish School Board.
The village collected more in sales taxes than most other towns in Vermilion Parish with larger populations than Maurice.
Part of the rise comes from a 43-home subdivision, Village Estates, though Maurice Mayor Wayne Theriot attributes the rapid increase in the tax base to a few factors.
"All of our businesses are doing well, and we have two big oilfield-related companies," he said. "It's just a reflection of the things happening around Maurice. Our businesses prospering is an indication that our citizens are prospering."
