Massive Fish Kill in Plaquemines Parish

POINTE-A-LA-HACHE, La. (AP) - A weekend fish kill in Plaquemines
Parish has prompted officials to ask state wildlife experts to
Dead fish were found floating atop the water at Bayou Chaland on
the west side of the Mississippi River late Friday. The dead fish
included pogies, redfish, drum, crabs, shrimp and freshwater eel.
The Times Picayune reports Monday that a cause has not yet been
determined but parish officials say the fish were found in an area
that has been impacted by oil from the BP spill in the Gulf of
Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser says they've also
the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration to test the area to deterine a cause.
A recent fish kill in nearby St. Bernard Parish was attributed
to low oxygen levels in the water.
