PLAQUEMINE, La. (AP) - A 25-year-old man wanted for the fatal shooting of another man during a Mardi Gras parade on Feb. 19 has surrendered to authorities.
Capt. Kenny Payne of the Plaquemine Police Department tells The Advocate Akeem O. Gailes was arrested at his attorney's office around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Payne says the suspect's mother called authorities Wednesday to inform them that her son was ready to surrender.
Gailes was booked with second-degree murder, felon in possession of a firearm, carrying of a firearm at a parade used in the commission of a crime of violence and simple battery.
Payne say 27-year-old Dewayne Milton Smith of White Castle was shot in the chest following an argument at the annual Plaquemine Community Parade.
It couldn't be determined if Gailes had an attorney.
