Man pleads not guilty to negligent homicide

LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) - A 30-year-old man charged with negligent homicide in the January 2012 death of a Calcasieu Parish sheriff's deputy pleaded not guilty during his arraignment in state district court.

Holly Carter, district attorney's office spokeswoman, tells the American Press Charles W. Harrell's trial date of May 12 was set Tuesday.

Authorities say Harrell was at fault in a four-vehicle accident on La. Highway 27 in Carlyss that claimed the life of Deputy Randall Lee Benoit.

Harrell was reportedly impaired at the time of the crash. State police say his vehicle crossed the center line and struck Benoit's vehicle head on. Two other vehicles then reportedly hit Benoit's car.
