Man pleads guilty in off-duty officer's death

GRETNA, La. (AP) - A 21-year-old man has pleaded guilty and will serve less than three years in prison for punching and killing an off-duty Gretna police officer on Bourbon Street last summer.
The Times Picayune reports that Joshua Miner pleaded guilty Tuesday to manslaughter in the death of 28-year-old Detective Brett Thomas. Miner was sentenced to three years in prison, with credit for time served.
Thomas died after being hit in the head in a French Quarter brawl in June 2010 involving his friends and Miner's friends.
Thomas was a seven-year veteran who had been promoted to detective four months before his death.
New Orleans police sought out Miner after piecing together video footage from private surveillance cameras and speaking to witnesses. Miner surrendered more than two months after the incident.
