An unidentified man was killed after being struck by a train near Manchac.
The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office responded about 9:30 a.m. Thursday along with Canadian National Railroad Police and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.
Sheriff's spokeswoman Dawn Panepinto said the man was found dead near the tracks.
Authorities believe a Canadian National train - a three-engine, 125-car locomotive carrying coal - was traveling south near mile marker 867.5 when the train's engineer saw the man lying on the tracks. Panepinto says the engineer applied the train's brakes and activated his horn, but the man never responded. She says contact was unavoidable.
The victim was transported the parish Coroner's Office for an autopsy.
The train was not damaged.
