HOUMA, La. (AP) - A Houma man is dead after jumping from a bridge into the Intracoastal Waterway.
Police say 51-year-old Kendall Cheramie, clad only in boxer shorts, jumped about 11:30 p.m. Monday. His body was pulled from the water early Tuesday.
The Courier reports that a passing motorist alerted authorities of a man sitting on the ledge of the bridge. Arriving deputies say they saw Cheramie dive head first into the 12-foot-deep waters below.
Investigators say the strong current in the ship channel dragged Cheramie under the water. His body was found about three hours later after a search by Sheriff's Office Water Patrol agents and firefighters.
Family members told investigators that Cheramie struggled with alcoholism and depression.
