Major Roadwork in Lafayette, Surrounding Areas

Construction projects are popping up along roadways all over Lafayette and surrounding areas-- in fact, $100 million dollars worth of work.

"Lafayette does not stand on its own to advance economically and socially without transportation in and out of the other parishes," says Bill Fontenot from Louisiana DOTD.

One of the biggest projects is on Evangeline Thruway from Lafayette to Broussard-- a widening of the Vermilion River bridge from 4 to 6 lanes.

"It will do a lot of good in reducing congestion and it's part of the evacuation route as well," says Fontenot.

On East Broussard Road, from Milton to 167, %6 million dollars is being spent on rebuilding and resurfacing.

The latest project in Lafayette starts this week, adding left-turn lanes from Bertrand Drive to Banks Avenue.

About $23 million has been spent on I-49 from the Lafayette-St. Landry Parish line up to Washington to repair the road.

It is all funded at a local, state and federal level-- and with some surplus money from hurricanes.

The Department of Transportation's goal is to have the major projects done within 18 months.
