The LSU Eunice baseball team avoided elimination and an early deficit on Friday afternoon, using an eight-run fifth inning to move past East Central Community College in the Region 23 Tournament.
The Bengals (42-12) will await the loser of the Jones County-Hinds Community College game Friday night and meet them in a 2 p.m. contest on Saturday afternoon.
Against East Central (24-29-1), the Bengals saw five players record multiple hits, as Stefan Trosclair led the attack with two hits and four RBIs, including a double and a home run. Tyler Chapman saw both of his hits go as doubles as he collected three RBIs, while Jordan Romero (2 RBIs, homer), Ray Veit (2 doubles) and Brennan Bozeman (RBI) all notched two hits as well.
Derek Herrington and Sam Walley each finished with a hit and an RBI in the win.
Left-hander Ben LeBlanc earned his third win of the season out of the bullpen after tossing 2 1/3 innings of relief, allowing just two hits with a strikeout. Starter Will Bacon did not factor into the decision after allowing four runs on five hits in 3 2/3 innings of work.
East Central jumped out to a four-run lead in the top of the fourth, using four hits, including an RBI single and a two-run single, to take the advantage before the Bengals cut into the deficit in the bottom of the fourth on Romero's solo home run to left field to lead off the inning.
Down three, LSU Eunice would take the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth when they posted the eight-run inning, highlighted by Chapman's three-run double, a two-run double from Trosclair, RBI singles from Bozeman and Romero and a sacrifice fly from Walley to bring home a run.
After a Bozeman leadoff single in the sixth, Trosclair sent the first pitch of his at-bat over the wall in left-center field before the Bengals plated one final run in the seventh when Veit opened the inning with a double and later scored on Herrington's RBI sacrifice fly.
Tomorrow afternoon's game can be seen on Bengal All-Access.
