NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Parks in Slidell, La., and Iuka, Miss., are getting federal grants to improve their marinas.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says Slidell's Heritage Park is getting $1.5 million, with $802,500 going to J.P. Coleman State Park in Iuka.
Marinas in Alabama, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C. are also getting competitive Boating Infrastructure Grants.
The 11 grants in 10 states total $7.5 million.
In Slidell, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and the city will put up $1 million of the cost to renovate existing bulkheads, build 42 floating docks and install safe walkways to the park and downtown.
In Iuka, several public and private agencies are providing more than $451,000 to build 20 transient boating slips at the J.P. Coleman marina.
