Longtime Diocese of Lafayette priest Martin Borcherding dies

A priest who served a number of Acadiana church parishes has died.

Father Martin Borcherding passed away Thursday afternoon in a New Iberia nursing home. He was 66.

Father Marty was a native of Brooklyn, New York, and attended seminary in New Orleans. He was ordained in the Lafayette diocese by Bishop Gerard Frey on May 19, 1973.

During his priesthood, Father Marty served as pastor and school administrator in Lake Charles, Loreauville, New Iberia, Abbeville, and Lafayette. He also served on the Council of Priests, Clergy Personnel Advisory Board, and the Bishop's Development Council.

Visitation will be held Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 P. M. until 9:00 P. M. at Evangeline Funeral Home in New Iberia and on Monday from 9:00 A. M. until 10:00 A. M. at St. Peter Catholic Church in New Iberia.

Funeral services begin at 10:00 Monday morning at St. Peter Catholic Church, with burial to follow at Holy Family Cemetery in New Iberia.
