Learn if your drinking water is safe

Residents in St. Martinville are concerned about some chemicals in their water that are known to cause health problems.

Our investigative team learned that Bayou Teche Water Works violated the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Act this year because its water contains high levels of disinfectant byproducts, which can cause liver, kidney and nervous system problems along with increased risk of cancer after prolonged exposure. But it's unclear whether the contamination is directly connected to the St. Martinville residents' health issues.

One other water system in St. Martin Parish, the City of St. Martinville's water system, was also cited for a similar issue by the state Department of Health and Hospitals this year.
