For the fifth consecutive year, Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG) and the University of Louisiana are welcoming incoming international students at a special City Hall ceremony organized by Le Centre International de Lafayette.
The event began in the City Council Auditorium with a warm welcome by City-Parish President Joey Durel and UL Lafayette President E. Joseph Savoie.
One hundred new international students from 37 different countries are watching a 20-minute slideshow about Lafayette and its university. City-Parish Council members, UL officials, representatives from various local organizations and student associations also are in attendance. The goal of the program, organizers explain, is to convey to these international students the gratitude of both the university and the city for choosing Lafayette and the University of Louisiana for their coursework in America.
Community and university leaders conclude by wishing the new Ragin' Cajuns good luck in their academic pursuits and by encouraging them to develop roots within the community during the upcoming years of study. The leaders suggest that the students strengthen the ties of international friendship during their academic careers.
