An attorney has been hired to oversee implementation of a consent decree governing reforms at the New Orleans Police Department.
The Times-Picayune reports that Jay Ginsberg, who has acted as the hearing examiner and administrative judge to the city's Civil Service Commission since 1995, will work in the NOPD Compliance Bureau under Superintendent Ronal Serpas for one year.
Serpas says the position will then be reevaluated to determine whether it should become permanent.
In September, a federal appeals court has refused to release NOPD from the consent decree.
The decree covers a series of requirements for overhauling policies and procedures for use of force, training, interrogation, searches and arrests, recruitment and supervision.
The department's compliance in the decree also will be monitored by U.S. District Judge Susie Morgan.
