Lafourche voters could send library money to jail

THIBODAUX, La. (AP) - Over the objections of the library system's director, the Lafourche Parish Council has approved a ballot measure in which voters will decide whether to redirect tax money from libraries to build a new jail.

Tuesday night's vote by the council means the decision goes to voters on Nov. 16.

The Daily Comet reports that conditions of the jail are so bad that Parish President Charlotte Randolph said she wouldn't be surprised to see a federal order forcing the parish to fix it.

Library supporters complained that taking money from libraries would hurt the community. Director Laura Sanders said the library system is being targeted despite being a good steward of public money.

If voters approve, the measure would rededicate one mill of a 3.8-mill library property tax.
