The Lafayette Young Lawyers Association hosted its annual Mock Trial Tournament which was held at the United States District Court, Western District of Louisiana on February 15,2014.
A total of six teams from Region II competed, representing Northside High School, the Early College Academy and Lafayette Christian Academy. Region II is composed of nine area parishes including Acadia, Allen, Beauregard, Cameron, Calcasieu, Evangeline, Iberia, Jeff Davis, Lafayette, Lafourche, St. Landry, St. Martin, St. Mary, Terrebonne, and Vermilion parishes.
Each team is given case material that includes the statement of the case, facts and background, descriptions of witnesses for both the plaintiff and defendant and possible exhibits. The teams are given the case in November which gives them time to study and prepare their case.
The mock trials are held in a real courtroom where the teams present their case before a presiding judge, jury of scoring attorneys, family and friends. Each team competes in two preliminary rounds in which the teams were given the opportunity to play the role of plaintiff and defendant. Scores from the first two rounds are tallied, and the top two scoring teams compete in a final round for the win. This year's final round was between two Northside High School teams. Both teams are going on to compete in the State Competition in Shreveport on March 29, 2014.
Individual performance awards were given to students who performed their roles exceptionally. In the category of Best Attorney, Jamila Dugas from Northside High School took home the trophy while Isiah Chavis from Northside High School was awarded the Best Witness trophy.
This event would not have been possible without the support of Durio, McGoffin, Stagg and Ackermann, the United States District Court, Western District of Louisiana and the Coca Cola Bottling Company of Lafayette.
