A Lafayette teenager collapsed and died while at basketball practice Monday night. 15 year old Shane Ozene was a sophomore at Acadiana High School, but was at practice for a recreational basketball league at Northside High School when he fell to the floor.
"We were getting set to run plays when he just collapsed," said Shane's teammate Damarcus Boutte.
Ozene was rushed to Lafayette General Medical Center, but was pronounced dead a short time later. Doctors told his family he likely died of an abnormal heart condition that went undetected his whole life.
"I still wanted to wake him up to go to school this morning and it's just not real," said Shane's Mom Shannon Ozene.
Ozene says her son just recently had a physical and had no history of any health problems.
"There are so many things that I'm going to miss about him," she said. "He was very loved by family and friends."
Funeral arrangements are pending, but will likely be finalized Wednesday.
