Lafayette SWAT and U.S. Marshals apprehend man in attic of Lafayette home

Acting on a tip from U.S. Marshals, the Lafayette Police Department SWAT team executed an arrest warrant for a Lafayette man hiding in his attic.

Marshals said that Jay Avent, 34, had taken several hours earlier in his attic when they took him into custody about 2 p.m. for "the unlawful taking of a motor vehicle." Marshals said they had not recovered the vehicle and had no word on its status.

About 9:15 a.m. Friday morning, U.S. Marshals in Mississippi alerted U.S. Marshals in Lafayette that Avent was wanted as a fugitive in DeSoto County, Mississippi. Marshals said that the Lafayette SWAT team apprehended Avent without incident from the home near Lafayette High on Meadow Lane.
