No assistant principal or counselor positions will be eliminated from Lafayette schools.
During a budget meeting tonight, the Lafayette Parish School Board voted to restore 7.5 assistant principals and 2.5 counselor positions that had been eliminated to save money.
The $1.3M in positions will be funded by excess sales tax revenue.
The board also approved its $600 million budget, which will now be subject to public inspection and a hearing before it is up for adoption on Aug. 21.
Public inspection will begin Aug. 5, and usually the proposed budget is unchanged between its approval and adoption.
This year, the adoption will be two months later than usual. Tonight was the board's eighth budget meeting in four months. They usually takes them four meetings over two months before finalizing a budget.
But, this year, the budget process began with a multi-million dollar shortfall that has delayed the budget process. The fiscal year began July 1 and the school system has been operating without a proposed budget since then.
The proposed, balanced budget includes:
- Increasing employee health insurance premiums
- $1.2 million in teacher raises funded by increased state funding
- Funding renovations for a teen pregnancy center at Northside High School
