Lafayette parish school board members have not completed the required yearly training and with only four days left in the year, time is not on their side. Some are falling short of the required six hours.
Since 2010, training has been mandatory for board members. It's designed to train them to better understand their duties and state laws. Workshops are essential for board members to learn about educational trends, research and policy, like how to handle bullying.
While some state workshops were help in close locations like Baton Rouge, others were farther away in Shreveport, New Orleans and Florida.
"I've been working hectic for the entire school year so I haven't been able to make it to any of the retreats to Florida and Baton Rouge," said Lafayette Parish School Board member Tehmi Chassion.
Chassion hasn't clocked any training hours this year.
"With me being a new pharmacist it's impossible for me to take off four, five days to go to some kind of training of that sort," said Chassion.
According to the Louisiana School Board Association's website, Chassion is not alone. Lafayette Parish School Board members Mark Cockerham has only three hours and Greg Awbrey has logged five hours. Awbrey is just one hour short the requirement. The rest of the board has reached well into the double digits. Board President Shelton Cobb has 45 hours.
"I always see my duties are to understand what the laws are and what the duties are for the educational process," said Cobb.
The workshops help members understand topics like harassment, intimidation and updates them on recent legislation like bullying.
"They all need to know new laws.. to keep up to speed, to keep up to date, board members need to attend this workshops," said
Chassion said there are a few last-minute workshops this year, but with his holiday schedule he's not sure if he'll be able to attend.
The Louisiana School Board Association said with the holiday season members who have logged hours in the last few weeks may not be listed yet. To view the training hours of all Louisiana board members click here.
