Almost every day children go to Lafayette Parish Schools without lunch money, but one mom is on a mission to make sure no child goes without school lunch ever again.
Cerissa Couvillion said all it took was eating lunch with her daughter at school one afternoon to realize something needed to change.
"I was sitting down with my daughter and I saw a little boy eating three graham crackers and milk and I said what is going on here," she said.
That's all a child gets if they don't have money in their account and don't qualify for a free lunch. State laws requires those children get a snack and the standard is three graham crackers and a milk.
"They have no idea their child didn't have lunch that day," she explained. "You forget or you haven't gotten paid yet, the account has gotten low. Lets face it we are all living that way right now."
She started Louisiana Lunch Money, a non profit organization that raises money to pay for elementary students lunches.
"They go through the line and if there is not enough funds in their account then they go through the Louisiana Lunch Money account that's set up at the school board."
When the organization launched in November, it paid for 315 student lunches the first week.
This Valentines Day, she's hoping to get more donations than ever.
All you have to do is donate 10 dollars to have a stuffed animal delivered to your special valentine. The push is to raise 3000 dollars, which will help feed 2100 kids.
To donate go to this website www.louisianalunchmoney.com and click on "about us" then click "donate." For every ten dollars you donate, one stuffed animal will be delivered to your special valentine. The founder said when you are filling out the Pay Pal form, put the Valentine's name and what school they attend in the optional billing address blank.
You can also email the organization, all the contact info is on the website.
