October 23rd is the 30th anniversary of the Beirut barracks bombing that killed 220 U.S. Marines and 21 other service members.
The troops, who had been deployed to keep peace during Lebanon's civil war, died when a suicide bomber drove a truck full of explosives into their building. Until september 11th, 2001, this was the deadliest terrorist attack on Americans.
Among those who died was 19-year-old Lance Corporal Lex Trahan from Lafayette. Dozens of friends and family of Trahan paid tribute to him during a memorial service on the 30th anniversary of the Beirut barracks bombing.
"Some of us remember exactly where we were when it happened 30 years ago, and to be here today it just brings it all back," Trahan's classmate Susan Begnaud said.
Trahan was a 1982 graduate of Comeaux high school, and joined the Marines shortly after he graduated. He voluntarily chose to go to Beirut, and died in the bombing.
"He was just a genuine person," Begnaud said. "And for, to look around and see the people who are here and the emotion that is still so fresh, I mean it just says a lot for our class the people at Comeaux and the friends and family that we have," she said.
Classmates, family, and Trahan's parents placed roses on his memorial to pay tribute to him.
"I'm kind of emotional, I'm trying not to cry but you know it's just so heart-warming and sad at the same time," Trahan's mother Shirley Trahan said.
Trahan was his parents only child. His mother says Lex was just two weeks away from coming back home at the time of the bombing. He had even begun packing up his belongings.
"It's a big, big, honor to know he served his country, died for his country. As hard as it was, I mean you know we have to accept it, and we accepted it. it's a large wheel," Shirley Trahan said.
In addition to the tribute, a fund has been started at Spedales florist to provide arrangements for other major holidays to honor Lance Corporal Lex Trahan. Contact Spedales, if you're interested in making a donation.
