A Lafayette man is behind bars in connection with eight armed robberies and one attempted armed robbery.
Friday night police noticed a suspect pacing near a convenience store in the 600 block of East Kaliste Saloom road while they were working a robbery operation.
According to Lafayette Police Corporal Paul Mouton, the suspect, Keiwaythan Turner, 25 years old, covered his face, and pulled out a gun before going into the store.
"We're fortunate they were able to get to him before he entered the store, and place him under arrest. He was charged with attempted armed robbery," Mouton said.
Whenever there's an increase in robberies, additional police units patrol likely target spots.
Mouton says the Lafayette Police Department received help from the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's office, the FBI, and the ATF. He says when law enforcement agencies work together, they have a better chance at catching a suspect.
"Any time you have something impacting the community like the numerous armed robberies that we've been experiencing, it's important that law enforcement work together, and in this case it paid off," Mouton said.
Mouton warns store owners to clean out their store front windows. He says added clutter in the window make it hard to see into the store.
"Crime is about opportunity. The more you decrease that opportunity the less likely you'll become a victim," Mouton said.
