Lafayette Celebrates Socktober

A Lafayette business is celebrating Socktober in response to a viral YouTube video's call to arms. Socktober, as coined by the YouTube sensation, Kid President, is a movement to encourage the nation to help the homeless by donating items, like socks, to shelters. And that's exactly what Maven of Lafayette plans to do.

"I think it's time we do something awesome. That's why I'm declaring this month of October, Socktober," said the Kid President in his video.
That video is how it all started; A simple request from YouTube's Kid President, and now Lafayette is celebrating Socktober.

"Kid President is asking everyone to help the homeless in their neighborhoods," said Sarah Clement with Lafayette Catholic Services. "So we help the homeless in Acadiana and we thought it would be a great way to partner with someone."

Maven of River Ranch has stepped up. During the month of October, for every pair of socks you buy, two pairs will be donated to LCS.

"The idea to be able to give more than on pair of socks. To be able to give something that signifies the gift of charity to others in our community is really an awesome opportunity for us," said Christina Barbier, the co-owner of Maven.

In Lafayette there are at least 500 homeless. Hundreds more throughout Acadiana.

"Being able to have something warm, and comforting, and try to keep illness at bay, I think it's just immeasurable in their lives, even though it's really simple in our lives," said Clement.

Maven has already sold 75 pairs of socks within the last week. Their goal is to sell at least 500, meaning a donation of 1,000 pairs of socks.
"Socktober is a fun way to bring awareness to a very serious problem that faces Acadiana," said Barbier.

"We love it when the community gets involved in anything," said Clement. "That's what I love about Lafayette."

For those who participate Maven is holding a contest, the prize 12 pairs of socks. All you have to do is take a picture of you're newly purchased socks from Maven, post it to Instagram, #socktober, @mavenmenswear and @catholicservice for you're chance to win.
