Lafayette 5th healthiest parish in Louisiana

Residents all over Lafayette Parish are taking health and wellness into their own hands.

"The avenues and the opportunities to exercise and stay in shape are increasing in Lafayette," says Dr. Jason Durel.

It's not just more people getting off their couch and into the gym. The growing number of healthy eating choices seems to also follow the law of supply and demand.

"We've had to really ramp up our kitchen staff to take on the demand."

Dan Lansdown just opened Ready Fit Meals. It's a unique concept, providing customers with freshly made, pre-portioned, healthy gourmet meals on the go.

"They're very convenient for someone to come in, get a meal, heat it up here in the cafe, sit down and eat and they can also grab meals for the rest of the day."

Eating right and exercising are often the best medicine when it comes to preventing a host of medical problems, but another reason Lafayette residents are able to stay so healthy- there are more doctors per capita in Lafayette than any other area and they can catch problems before it's too late.

"Like having a heart attack and having to have heart surgery, as opposed to taking blood pressure medication everyday to prevent it," says Durel.

The elephant in the room? Money. Lafayette residents can pay. They rank 11th in median household income making nearly $6,000 more than the state median.

"Tt's better for you, it's easier to treat, it's cheaper to treat, much easier for everybody to prevent health problems as opposed to waiting until it's too late," says Durel.
