KLB Recognizes Keep Opelousas Beautiful as Affiliate of the Month

Baton Rouge, La. - Keep Opelousas Beautiful (KOB) has been named June's "Affiliate of the Month," by Keep Louisiana Beautiful (KLB), the state's nonprofit organization dedicated to litter prevention, waste reduction, and community improvement. KOB was selected as Affiliate of the Month in part for its outstanding efforts in grant implementation, governmental support, and innovative project implementation.

Since its inception in October 2011, KOB has been awarded more than $11,000 in grants, including a Lowe's Keep America Beautiful (KAB) Community Improvement Grant; KLB's Healthy Community Grant; and KAB's Cigarette Litter Prevention Program Grant. Through this funding they are improving North Railroad Ave., the street where the famous LouAna's Cooking Oil plant is located. They also implemented the Litter Barrel Project, which resulted in the installation of eight bright red litter barrels in heavily littered areas, and have installed cigarette receptacles throughout the town.

"It is a great source of pride for KLB when we witness one of our newer affiliates make significant impact in their communities," Leigh Harris, Executive Director of KLB, said. "Although Keep Opelousas Beautiful is only in their third year as a Keep Louisiana Beautiful affiliate, their achievements are equal to those of many long-time organizations."

KOB has worked with city government and its leaders to help achieve environmental responsibility by sponsoring two city ordinances to make Opelousas a cleaner city. Its first effort resulted in the Trailer Park Ordinance to beautify these areas. Another ordinance in process is directed toward the on-going problem of animal waste on public property.

KOB is also initiating neighbor-helping-neighbor programs in hopes of these leading to neighborhood associations that can work to beautify their surroundings, prevent litter and reduce waste in their own ways.

"Receiving this award is a welcomed ‘pat on the back' from such a prestigious organization like Keep Louisiana Beautiful," Raymond Duplechain, KOB Executive Director, said. "The KLB Affiliate of the Month Award is a concrete validation recognizing all the hard work Keep Opelousas Beautiful has done so far."

KLB honors affiliate organizations throughout the state each month to recognize their progress. The affiliate of the month is selected based on specific criteria that make that affiliate community stand out among its peers.
