KATC has learned that according to State Police in an arrest affidavit, the child involved in a human trafficking case against 37-year old Katherine Vidrine in Lafayette is the one who came forward to report the abuse.
Vidrine allegedly profited--after bringing a juvenile to several homes for sexual encounters with men. Vidrine is charged with trafficking and molestation.
Now Katherine Vidrine's neighbors are speaking out, saying she's been troubled for years.
We checked court records, and found several civil cases involving Vidrine, as well as guilty pleas for a drug related offense, and being an accessory after the fact to an armed robbery.
Katherine Vidrine grew up in a Carencro neighborhood, and moved back six months ago into her childhood home after her father died.
"That was definitely noticeable when she was back all the chaos that it brought," Vidrine's neighbor Natalie Duhon said.
Duhon says she's known Vidrine for over 20 years.
"We knew her has Katie growing up," Duhon said.
Duhon could never imagine Vidrine would one day be accused of human trafficking and molestation charges.
"Very shocking, very shocking. It's hard to imagine anyone doing it, but especially someone you've known and kind of watched over when their dad was off-shore and kind of tended too," Duhon said.
Neighbors say they've suspected problems with Katherine Vidrine for months. At her home there have been complaints of loud music, shouting, and they've had suspicions of drug and alcohol abuse.
"A lot of chaos...a lot of arguing between her and other members that were staying with her in the household, and all times of the night," Duhon said.
Troopers say Vidrine would take the child to the houses of more than one man at several different Lafayette Parish homes. The juvenile says Vidrine told her she needed money or other things of value, and Vidrine would stay in the room when some of the sexual encounters occurred.
Vidrine is in the Lafayette Parish jail now facing two felonies.
"That's I think the hardest part, is because she was a beautiful girl and could have done so much more with her life," Duhon said.
Bond in this case is set for 50 thousand dollars. Troopers say more arrests could be coming. They say the juvenile gave them the names of several men who allegedly engaged in the sexual activity, and even the name of a man who refused to participate. The juvenile was under the age of 12 when the first sexual contact happened.
One of the men arrested in connection with this case, according to troopers, was 52-year-old Ryan McCauley. He's now serving time in the Franklin Parish jail after pleading guilty to reduced charges of indecent behavior with a juvenile.
