Kaplan Police officers now have a new protection tool. Officers are now equipped with digital video recorders. The small Muvi cameras can record 8 hours of video.

Kaplan Police Chief Boyd Adams said the cameras will clip on an officer's uniform. The patrol officers are required to start recording when they exit their vehicle. Recordings can be downloaded by plugging a USB port into a computer.

For one week, Adams has been collecting the cameras at the end of shifts and saving the data. The recordings have time and date stamps. According to Chief Adams, the cameras can protect the officer, they're good for court purposes and officer complaints.

The Kaplan Police Department ordered three packages for $250 each. Twelve officers will use them on their varying shifts.
