ABBEVILLE, La. (AP) - A state district judge rules that a former Vermilion Parish police juror cannot run for Abbeville City Council because he pleaded guilty in 2005 to a felony.
Ernal "E.J." Broussard says he will appeal the ruling handed down Thursday by Judge Marilyn Castle.
Councilman Francis Touchet went to court the day after Broussard qualified to run for Touchet's seat.
Under state law, someone convicted of a felony he cannot run for office for 15 years without a pardon from the president or governor.
Broussard resigned from the police jury before pleading guilty to aiding and abetting illegal business by cashing checks for a gambling operation at his liquor store in Abbeville. He got six months of home confinement and two years of probation.
