A teacher allegedly hitting a student at Jeanerette Senior High School was caught on camera and the teacher is facing criminal charges. The video was exclusively obtained by KATC.
According to court records, the surveillance video on October 21, 2013 shows Physical Education teacher Larry Brown in a hallway approach a 13-year-old student in a white T-shirt. In the video, the student appears to back away, but the teacher pursues.
"He pushes him to a corner. He punches him between the legs, he picks his foot up and stomps on him. You see him laying there on the floor," said Rachel Ward, the mother of the student.
Ward pressed charges after the incident and now Brown is facing simple battery and simple assault. Ward claimed this isn't the first time something like this happened.
"He (her son) says 'I'm tired of going to that class, I am not his punching bag.' I said, 'did you tell somebody?" Ward said.
Ward said her son complained to an administrator at Jeanerette Senior High School about this incident, but no action was taken until she pressed charges.
"(The administrator allegedly) ignored the whole situation. Had the person talked to him and listened it wouldn't have got to this point," Ward said.
Administrators at Jeanerette Senior High School refused to comment about the incident.
Brown was put on one week of paid suspension in October and one week of unpaid suspension in November. On November 13, 2013, less than one month after the incident, Brown's suspension ended and he returned to work.
**Disclaimer: Only Jeanerette Senior High teacher Larry Brown was implicated in this incident. No other Iberia Parish educators listed on Iberia Parish personnel paperwork shown in the video were involved with this incident**
Ward had her son change schools to avoid any further contact with the teacher.
"I'm not a parent to sit back and let you hurt my child. Not my child," Ward said.
Iberia Parish School System Superintendent Dale Henderson was unaware of the charges when KATC called him today.
He said depending on the outcome of the trial the school system will act accordingly. Brown's pretrial is 9 a.m. June 19 in Jeanerette City Court.
