Jail grievance computers could get to Internet

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Orleans Parish Prison inmates will have to file grievances on paper because authorities discovered they were using grievance computers to use the Internet.

Sheriff Marlin Gusman's office said Friday that it had notified the company that provides the computer kiosks of the problem. Spokesman Phillip Stelly said the vendor plans to upgrade the software on all the kiosks to prevent future problems.

Stelly tells Nola.comThe Times-Picayune that the office doesn't know how long the glitch went on or how many inmates had access.

Inmate advocates, the U.S. Justice Department and experts appointed by a federal judge to monitor court-ordered improvements have criticized the jail's grievance process.

Critics say the jail staff often pay too little heed to inmate grievances, meaning medical or other problems are never addressed.
