Another winter morning in Lafayette and another freeze. Today marks the 24th day the temperature has drop to 32 or below. Normal winters bring about 6-10 days below freezing from November through March.
For the 2012-13 winter we only dropped to 32 or less four times. In the 2011-12 winter it was seven. But for the 2010-11 winter, 27 times! It's only early February, so we've got time to break that one.
Normally the last freeze occurs on or around March 1st here in Lafayette. Coastal parishes usually have the last freeze anywhere between Valentine's Day and the end of the month. Areas up north including Allen, Evangeline, and St. Landry parishes usually wait until the first week in March, while Alexandria's average is more toward the middle of March.
Last year our last freeze was March 3, 2013. 2012 it was February 12, and 2011 was February 13. The earliest last freeze in recent memory was January 20, 2008, the latest March 5, 2002. Over the past 13 years, the average last freeze was February 16th.
