The 5-year-old killed in a vehicle crash Sunday afternoon in Lafayette has been identified as Alajah Davis. According to a release from the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Department, evidence at the scene indicates that a crossover vehicle being driven by 19-year-old Jerica Cawthorne was heading north on Robley Drive. They believe she lost control and entered the path of a southbound pickup truck being driven by a 53-year-old Julie Ward from Arkansas. The truck hit Cawthorne's vehicle on the passenger side.
The 5-year-old girl was wearing a safety harness in the front passenger seat and was pronounced dead at the scene. A one-year-old boy, Jayden Cawthorne, was in a child safety seat in the back seat of Cawthorne's vehicle and is currently in stable condition at a local hospital. The elder Cawthorne is in critical condition at this time.
According to the release, it is unclear if she or the other driver was wearing a seatbelt when the crash happened. The driver of the pickup truck was treated and released at a local hospital.
