Iberia Parish is ready to start the 2014-2015 school year. Superintendent Dale Henderson says it's all about getting started off the right way. Iberia is one of two parishes that begin the year on a Friday. Starting on a Friday allows them work out any problems with schedules and buses and makes for smooth sailing come Monday, but with the first day you need to be flexible.
"Get out to the bus stop a little bit earlier than you normally would have, so if the buses are running a little bit earlier, than you'll be there. If they're a little bit late just be patient because it is the first day of school," Henderson said.
Not only that, but being present for orientation before the first day is very important. Students are able to handle any fees and get to walk their new buildings if they've entered a new school.
"Our school supply lists are online. They are on our website so you can get a full listing of the school supply list that are necessary to begin the school year," Henderson said.
Joining new students this year are plenty of new teacher hires. They, along with the veteran teachers, have worked through professional developments to gear up for the new school year.
"We welcomed 125 new teachers to the district at an all day orientation for them. They are set to go and we have 27 schools in the parish with a little over 14,000 students and we are looking forward to welcoming them back this Friday," Henderson said.
